Reasons Behind the Name Huck

  1. We both love the sound of the name and it’s uniqueness. Everyone is familiar with the name “Huck,” yet it was left out of a book of 40,000 baby names we looked at.
  2. We both love the book The Adventures of Huck Finn. We read it together a few years back. It’s considered by many to be one of the most prized pieces of American Literature and we agree. Ernest Hemingway is quoted to say “All modern American literature comes from” Huck Finn, and hailed it as “the best book we’ve had.” The book has been said to have played a key role in the humanizing of the African American slave and thus influencing the civil rights movements of the 1960s. In the book, Huck isn’t a perfect character, yet he is admirable in his compassion and decency during his search for adventure. Sounds awesome.
  3. The name has come to mean “steadfast friend” in today’s culture, as in Huck Finn’s relation to Tom Sawyer.
  4. “I’m your huckleberry.” A phrase popularized recently by the character Doc Holiday in the film Tombsone, can also mean “the right man for the job.” So cool. For even more history on the term, “I’m your huckleberry,” read this explanation by Michael Quinion.
  5. Holly had a friend whose husband was named Huck. He seemed to be a very lovable person who had a great experience with the name his whole life.
  6. In the last presidential election there was a candidate who’s nickname was “Huck” so the name is not limiting in that sence.
  7. You can call him Huckleberry when he is a baby if you want. But his name is Huck.
  8. If Huck wants to be real fancy when he grows up he can always go by H. David Peterson. If he wants to be the CEO of some fortune 500 company or something. But that’s up to him.
  9. The name Huck just seems lovable, strong, friendly, and masculine. Perfect.
  10. He can also be called HD Peterson. High Def Peterson. 1080Peterson. Awesome.
  11. When Huck goes to first grade there will be a lot weirder and unfamiliar names than his by far. Here are some extremes.
  12. Huck’s middle name was chosen to honor Holly’s father and Holly’s side of the family. Todd’s side of the family gets honored by the Peterson name living on.

I throughly enjoyed reading this lovely piece but not as much as I did when I first heard this read in the hospital. The very idea that we could even name a baby., let alone a perfect B O Y, let alone that he had this daddy and mommie who have given such care to think of all the best for him. Right from the get go gramma Rose Ann called him Hucklebaby. I ask you how cut is that. Thank you TP for posting this story.
